Petraeus: 'Show me' if Iran has stopped supplying Iraqi insurgents
I don't doubt for a second that Iran is sending arms into Iraq. There is a debate about if its Qods policy or Iranian governmental policy; the latter doesn't necessarily control the former. And we should strive to stop it.
There are many ways to end it. Bush and Cheney are aching to use what's left of our military, which would sink us deeper into the suckhole of Iraq. The Iraqi government is trying to get it to stop, and maybe that'll work.
Or we could try stopping our funding for the Peoples Resistant Movement of Iran. They're a Sunni insurgent group based in Balochistan that attacks targets in Iran's Sistan and Baluchistan Provinces. Remember that car bomb in Southern Iran that killed 18 Iranian soldiers back in February? That was these guys. Or maybe we stop funding and backing the People's Mujahedin of Iran.
I say this with no sympathy directed towards Iran. Before they executed the PRMI guys for the bombing they brutally tortured them in some pretty sick ways. But from a strict geo-political viewpoint, our main concern is securing Iraq, not causing internal mischief in Iran. If we cut the PRMI or PMI loose the Iranians will likely respond in similar fashion. But that idea is likely too simple for Bush and Co.
Until Bush realizes that our actions do not occur in a vacuum and focuses on one issue at a time, the insanity in Iraq will never stop. It's that simple.
